Puppy Training

Puppy training is most effective during the "critical socialization period," which typically lasts until a puppy is about 16 weeks old. During this time, they are like sponges, soaking up information about what is safe, what is rewarded, and how to behave.

1.What do we teach: A. Socialization (The Most Important Step) B. House Training (Potty & Crate) C. Bite Inhibition & Manners D. Basic Obedience (Cues) 2. Training Timeline: What to Teach When A. 8–10 Weeks: Potty training, crate training, name recognition, and gentle handling. B.10–12 Weeks: Expanding socialization, "Sit," "Come," and introducing the leash indoors. C. 3–4 Months Stay, Down, Leave It, and short walks in low-distraction environments. D. 4–6 Months Practicing cues in public (parks, pet stores) to proof behaviors against distractions. 3. How do we teach: A. Positive Reinforcement: Use high-value treats, toys, and praise. Dogs repeat behaviors that get them what they want. B. Keep it Short: Puppies have the attention span of a toddler. Aim for 5-minute sessions, 3 times a day. C. Be Consistent: If you don't want the adult dog on the couch, don't let the puppy on the couch. Use the same command words every time. D. We Never Punish Fear: If a puppy is scared of something. 4. Why It is Important: A. Safety: A dog with a reliable "Stay" or "Recall" is a safe dog. B. Bonding: Training is the best way to build a deep relationship with your pet. C. Reduced Stress: A dog that understands the rules of the house is much calmer and less anxious than one that is constantly guessing.
